Kappadu near Calicut, India
Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer and was the first European to reach India by sea, linking Europe and Asia for the first time by ocean route. This was accomplished on his first voyage to India (1497–1499).
On 8 July 1497 Vasco da Gama led a fleet of four ships with a crew of 170 men from Lisbon. The fleet arrived in Kappadu near Calicut, India, on 20 May 1498 (King of Calicut - the Samudiri i.e. Zamorin).
