Kylián was Artistic Director of the Theatre from 1976 to 1999, during which he created a three-tier system with a tier for fostering young talent and a tier for dancers for forty till death. He remained as house choreographer until the end of 2009, and went on to create several dance films. He has an Honorary Doctorate from Julliard School New York, and an appointment as member of the Académie des Beaux Arts in Paris, to a position especially created for him.
