The US's formal withdrawal from the 2015 Paris Agreement became effective
The agreement was to combat climate change and to accelerate and intensify the actions and investments needed for a sustainable low carbon future, with the aim to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius. It had the consent of 193 out of 197 parties (including the US). It became legally binding on 4 November 2016.
