Inferior planets
The terms "inferior planet" and "superior planet" were originally used in the Ptolemy's geocentric cosmology to differentiate planets (Mercury and Venus) with an epicycle that remained collinear with the Earth and Sun, compared to those that did not (Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn).
