Examine chemical structure, phase and polymorphy, crystallinity and molecular interactions
The technique is non-destructive and is commonly used to provide a structural fingerprint by which molecules can be identified. Laser light is used to interact with molecular vibrations, phonons or other excitations in the system. The resulting shifts in energy give information about the vibrational modes in the system. It is similar to and complementary to infrared spectroscopy.
