Yes, birds have ears. It’s difficult to see the ears on most birds because they are covered by feathers, but many birds have an excellent sense of hearing.

Each of the bird’s ear openings are usually just a hole behind and slightly below each eye. This hole is often as large as the eye itself! The feathers that cover the holes protect the ears and cut down on wind noise as the bird flies.

Just like the human ear, a bird’s ear has three sections—an outer ear, a middle ear, and an inner ear. These parts work together to move the sounds along to the bird’s brain, so the bird can recognize other bird calls and, in some birds, such as owls, help it find food.
