A merchant has 1000 kg of sugar, part of which he sells at 8% profit and the rest at 18% profit. He gains 14% on the whole.
What is the quantity he sold at 18% profit ?

Let Total weight =W=1000Kg,I=14%
Then Part 1 weight=W1=x ,I1=8%
and part 2 weight=W2=(1000-x) ,I2=18%
Therfore
P=P1+P2
W*(14/100)=[x*(8/100)]+[(1000-x)*(18/100)]
x=400
W1=400
W2=1000-400=600
Ans:A Merchant sold 600 Kg of sugar @ 18% profit
