Fill 1 cup of water, then pour it into the other cup so that a quarter of water remains in the larger cup. Then, empty the 3 quarter cup and pour the 1 quarter that is in the other cup into the 3 quarter cup. Fill 1 cup of water again, and pour the water into the 3 quarter cup until full, and you should have half a cup of water in the larger cup.

A=fill up to 1 cup
B=fillup to 3 quarters of cup
now,
2*3 quarters =1.5 cup water put in C container.
remove 1 cup of water from C and put it in A
balance in C is 1.5-1.0=0.5 cup of water
i.e. half cup of water.
required for making a cake.

Fill up 3/4 litre cup, empty it to 1 litre cup. Again fill up 3/4 cup. Now pour till 1 litre cup is filled. What will remain in 3/4 cup will be half litre.
In this method, no third cup is required!
