Today, Sam is 40 years old and his son is 12 years old.

Let X = Sam age and Y = SamJr age
8 years ago ,
X - 8 = 8 * ( Y - 8)
Now
X + Y = 52
Solving the two equations, yields X = 40 Y = 12
