Possibly four reasons
Vertical Stacking: so that they can be stacked up one top of the another
vertical strength: to deal with the weight from stacking.
radial strength: to deal with the internal pressure from its contents.
functionality: to help prevent the liquid to go in your mouth and not down your chin.
