When Pedro was walking home yesterday, he saw a boy from school hitting a donkey with a large stick! The boy and his whole family were laughing at it. Pedro ran home and told his mother - and she too began to laugh! Why are all these people so cruel?

Because it was just a party and the boy was trying to hit the piñata blindfolded (which you conveniently left out here)to get the candies inside it and therefore the rest were laughing and enjoying it. And that's why his mom too laughed after realising this.
