You want to hire a temporary employee for 11 days.

You offer him $11 as wages to be paid on 11th day, but the employee suggests an alternative so that he gets paid daily.

For the first day of work, he will be paid a penny.

For the second day, two pennies.

For the third day, four pennies.

The salary for each subsequent day will be double the previous day’s, until the 11 day’s term is over.

Ignoring the legalities of such a situation, would it be a good idea to accept the potential employee’s proposal?

It would if you fire him after the 10th day.
The salary is 2^n -1 in dollar-cents, where n is the number of days.
After 11 days, his salary would be $ 20.46, which is more than the $ 11 of your offer.
So no, you should reject the employee's proposal.
(After 10 days the salary is $ 10.23)

1*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2=1024
=10.24 dollar
Less than 11 dollars
Can be hired.

The $10.24 is the wage for only the 11th day. You are forgetting the wages for the other days.

Joesph walked Chuck, a potential new employee, through his company. He briefly went over the safety precautions of a couple machines, their uses, and regular day-to-day activity. Joseph was very impressed with Chuck's qualifications and knowledge on the workings of his business. Chuck was applying for a position in shipping. Joseph took him by the wall where a single dollar hung up. He proudly explained that it was the first dollar he ever made, almost 20 years ago, when the business first started. Finally Joseph brought the man outside and showed him his parking spot. Chuck thanked Joseph for the tour, but then directed Joseph to put his hands over his head.
