A sample of 0.025 mol of chloride of an element Z was dissolved in distilled water and solution made up to 500cm3. 12.5cm3 of this solution reacted with 25cm3 of 0.1 mol dm-3 silver nitrate solution.

What is the most likely formula of chloride?
A) Z2Cl2
B) ZCl

ZCl4

You have 0.025 mol Y.
This is dissolved in 500 cm3 of which you take 12.5 cm3.
Thus you have 0.025 * (12.5 / 500) = 0.000625 mol Y.
There is enough Chloride ions to react with (25 * (0.1 / 1000) =) 0.0025 mol AgNO3.
The reaction stoichiometry is 1 mol chloride ions per mol silver nitrate.
Thus the chloride content per mol Y is: 0.0025 / 0.000625 = 4.
Compound Y is ZCl4.

Of all the elements of the Periodic Table, this element is the most aggressive and ruthless in its pursuit of stealing electrons from other atoms. It has an insatiable appetite to fill its outer shell.

Hint: when combined with its cohort in crime, Hydrogen ion, it forms the only known compound that can etch glass.
