The average of marks obtained by 120 candidates was 35. If the average of passed candidates was 39 and that of failed candidates was 15.

The difference between the low and average is 20, between the high and average is 4. Therefore the ratio passed / failed is 5 : 1.
Of the 120 candidates 100 passed and 20 failed.
