file selection dialog size/sort preferences forgotten

I have migrated my home directory (basically copy/pasted) from a 10.04 system to a new system running 12.04 freshly installed. An annoying thing I've noticed is that certain file selection dialogs (open/save) are not remembering their size and sort preferences. for example, in both firefox and libreoffice, whenever I go to open or save a file, the dialog box always opens in an oversize window that is beyond the bounds of my screen. As such, I have to resize it everytime in order to use the dialog box and click on the "OK" or "Cancel" buttons.

Additionally, the file listing is always sorted by modification time, so i have to tell it to sort by name each time.

Another similar thing I've noticed is that when i open certain pictures in Image Viewer, it opens them in a window that goes beyond the bounds of my screen, forcing me to resize the window before i can see the whole picture.

I'm not sure if these are application-specific settings or if it's some setting in gnome/gconf. either way, would appreciate knowing a way to reset these window preferences.

If you can increase the size of your screen resolution you should be good to go. If you use an nVidia driver, you will have to use the nvidia X Server Settings application.

I reinstalled Fedora 18 with KDE and I notice a change in the order in which directories and files are displayed. In some applications, the sort is now case sensitive, so that all the initial capitals are listed before the initial lower case names. Previously, the names were sorted without case sensitivity.

I see this behavior in Firefox, Thunderbird, Acroread and others. There are other application where the file dialog sorts files using a case insensitive sort, like Dolphin, k3b, or kget.

I edited kdeglobals to add "Sort case insensitively=true" to the [KFileDialog Settings] section. This should be the default. It did not make any difference.

Any suggestions on how to set the file name sort order?

The task: from within a particular folder (~/Music) and subfolders, find the newest file.

Attempted solution: in the file manager from Unity, enter "*" as the search term; oh, that won't work. Ok, click on "+" after the search, hm, that only has one option, file type, not even a range of date/times. Ok, is there another way to search? Enter "search" in the launcher, no luck.

Usually I'll open a terminal at that point and solve it from the shell. But I really need a better solution for the guy I'm helping. So what is a real(tm) way to search on Ubuntu? And it should work for a particular folder.

Would you recommend to install KDE instead? (This guy is not really a power user, but not a newbie either. And I'm starting to feel like I should show him KDE, as I've run into many bugs and limitations on Unity, and over the last 1.5 years things haven't really changed as far as I can see.)
