Connecting to an Android device via WiFi

Question

I have Ubuntu 12.04 and I can connect to my Android device via USB. I installed MTP support and it works fine, as it seems.

Also, my Ubuntu computer and the Android device is connected to the Internet via WiFi. Is there an easy way to connect them to each other via WiFi for easy file sharing? A step by step instruction would be nice, as I am not even sure where to start.

There's Airdroid, WiFi File Transfer and others that allow you to connect wirelessly through a gui. Just search for Airdroid on Play Store. It's really simple to use.

There are several free simple shh and vnc apps on google play that allow 2 way traffic and easy file management etc.

There are also apps that turn you Android phone into a remote control for media players / mouse touch-pad etc. I use AiO (all-in-one) remote almost daily (superb at remote for laptop when plugged into TV for watching video etc). All the ones I have tried have worked once set and the setup is accompanied by good documentation and help & support if needed

An app named AndSMB can connect to Samba shares on Linux, Windows and OS X hosts.

But probably the simplest method though is to install the OpenSSH sshd server (apt-get install openssh-server) on your Ubuntu PC then connect to it from your Android device using the AndFTP app using the SFTP protocol.

Both apps are free, available from the Google Play Store.

The media player app BSPlayer can play most video & audio file formats from an SMB share over the network, so you don't have to copy media files to the device first. Handy if you have a mediaserver at home.
