In 3GPP-LTE to WiFi handover can have two cases -

1) Trusted Access : operator-built Wi-Fi access with over-the-air encryption and a secure authentication method which is generally provided by the operator.

2) Untrusted Access : Untrusted access includes any type of Wi-Fi access that either is not under control of the operator (public open hotspot, subscriber’s home WLAN, etc.) or that does not provide sufficient security (authentication, encryption, etc.).

Check the call flow of the handover in the following documents (difficult to describe here as this is a big space) -

3GPP TS 23.402
3GPP TS 24.302

During the Handover from LTE to WiFi, how an UE is authenticated at WiFi network ?
Is there any difference in authentication procedure when UE is handed over to un-trusted or trusted WiFi network ?

As per my knowledge, WiFI calling is supported over untrusted(using ePDG/S2b) networks from Rel 10 onwards.
But I am not sure about WiFi over trusted(TWAG/S2a) networks and having few doubts.

  1. Is VoWiFI is supported over trusted(using TWAG or S2a) networks, if not then what are the limitation?
  2. Is LTE to WiFI handover supported over S2a interface(TWAG) ?

Any help, pointers will be appreciated.
