A mouse
The carving is said to represent the legend of a mouse who nested in the roots of a rose tree standing in the garden of the church, with the life of which the independence of Lubeck was said to be linked; the mouse nest was thought to have caused the rose tree to die, after which Lubeck was annexed by Denmark. The carved mouse, described as a reminder that dire misfortune can arise from a lesser evil overnight, is called Rosemary.
