Mute swan
From 1960 to 1984 the national bird was the skylark. In 1984, a vote of viewers of Danish national television replaced it with the mute swan (referencing the ugly duckling of the story by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen). Although the stork is a feature of folk and fairy stories in Denmark, the bird is rare now in the area.
