Sea
The acronym stands for Safety of Life at Sea. The first version in 1914 was signed in response to the sinking of the "Titanic" (implementation was overtaken by the outbreak of the First World War), the 1929 version was influenced by the 1928 sinking of the steamship "Vestris" off Virginia in the US, the 1960 version considered safety in nuclear-powered shipping. The 1974 version allowed faster amendment particularly in the light of fast-moving technical developments. The Conventions are international and concern the safety of merchant ships.
