Speaking out politically
Unamun, also an internationally known and respected novelist, iconoclastic essayist, poet, playwright, and philosopher, was stood down in 1914 after publicly favouring the Allied cause in World War I, and in 1936 after he denounced General Franco's Falangists. His most well-known novel is the intensely psychological "Abel Sanchez" (1917) a modern Cain and Abel relationship.
