IP offloading in LTE?

I was reading about the IP offloading in UMTS network using the IuPS interface, if we map the same technology to LTE then it should be from S1 interface. Since S1 interface is secure interface so it would be impossible to tap the data/sigalling at the S1 interface (my assumption). So can I assume the offloading in the LTE network is not possible.

In it's native form S1 interface is not so secured except that in most of the cases operator uses private network to backhaul the S1 interface, which may be considered as secured.
IPSec is the 3GPP standardized solution for S1 interface security. Use of IPsec ensures integrity and confidentiality of the traffic between the eNBs and the core network.
However IPsec adds additional transport overhead (increases from 15% to approximately 25%) and also typically requires IPSec gateway at core network side.

In practice operators may implement IPsec only in specific scenarios where eNBs uses public (untrusted) backhaul to connect to core network, e.g. HeNB etc.

By the way, for IP offload, LIPA or SIPTO are expected to be employed. LIPA is used to offload the IP traffic within the enterprise avoiding the mobile core network, whereas SIPTO is used to selectively offload the IP Traffic over internet by avoiding the mobile core network for the Data traffic.

Probably tap the interface between MME and SGW to get the idea of the S1-C so that you can tap S1-U. I believe S1U is not a secure interface guys correct me if I am wrong here. But its a matter of more thoughts I believe...

Hi,

Since LTE is based over data, a PDP session is established during the attach procedure.

I found out that some phones, especially modern ones, when moving from a Wifi network to LTE with Data Off, accept some traffic which is then charged. What solution do you implement in your network? Also I think that on PDP activation, even though Data is OFF, OCS will assign a chunk of data, and I think this will create a problem especially in Pay Per Use users since OCS will reserve an amount of money and then released once user disconnects from LTE.

What is the ideal way to overcome this problem in LTE?
